Komo POV

Anna Shipulina’s sculpture is organic and fluid, her forms at times raw and unglazed and others functional and refined. From horse hair raku to foil saggar firing, she plays with process, surface, heat, and light, embracing the mystery of the end result. Her work, often characterized by soft feminine curves is an expression of her appreciation and respect for imperfection over a drive for exaction.

The Horse Hair Raku Vase is made by Raku firing, an ancient Japanese ceramics technique that has been used for many centuries, in which horse hair is applied when the object is removed from the raku kiln and is glowing hot. The hair burns on the surface leaving carbon markings behind. Every vase comes out differently as a result, making it very unique. The Horse Hair Raku Vase is meant to hold only dried foliage and flowers.
